Start here: pick your path
🎓 If you're a fresher
Your degree gets you in the door; proof of skill gets you hired. In order:
- Build 2–3 real projects (or internships) and put them on GitHub / a simple portfolio.
- Get one free certificate in your field to show intent (see skills by sector below).
- Apply widely but tailor — Internshala/Apna for entry roles, plus Naukri & LinkedIn.
- Use your college network — seniors and alumni referrals convert far better than cold applies.
🔁 If you're experienced
Switching is usually the fastest way to a raise. Focus on:
- One flagship achievement per role, quantified (₹, %, scale, time saved).
- Referrals first — ex-colleagues and second-degree connections beat job boards.
- Target the pay jump — a move often adds 20–60% versus an internal hike.
- Check the market first with the Am I Underpaid? tool so you negotiate from data.
Where to search: best job portals in India
Use two or three that fit your profile rather than spreading thin across all of them.
| Category | Best portals | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| General (all levels) | Naukri, LinkedIn, Indeed, Foundit | The widest range of roles across industries. |
| Freshers & interns | Internshala, Apna, Freshersworld | Entry-level jobs, internships and apprenticeships. |
| Tech & startups | Wellfound (AngelList), Instahyre, Hirist, Cutshort | Product companies, startups and remote roles. |
| Research & direct | Company career pages, Google Jobs | Applying directly, often with less competition. |
Tip: turn on job alerts, and apply within the first 24–48 hours of a posting — response rates drop sharply after that.
How to apply so you get shortlisted
Make your resume ATS-friendly
Most companies filter resumes through software (an ATS) before a human sees them. To pass:
- Keep it simple: one column, standard headings, no tables, images, text boxes or fancy fonts.
- Mirror the job description: reuse the exact skill and tool names it lists (that's what the ATS matches).
- Lead with impact: "Cut load time 40%" beats "Responsible for performance". Numbers > duties.
- One page (freshers) or two (experienced), saved as PDF unless a Word file is requested.
- Test it free with a checker like Jobscan or Resume Worded before you send.
Win with referrals
A referral is the single highest-return job-search move. Send a short, specific note — not a mass copy-paste:
"Hi <name>, I saw <company> is hiring a <role>. I've done <one relevant thing> and think I'd be a good fit — would you be open to referring me or pointing me to the right person? Resume attached, no pressure either way."
Turn LinkedIn into a magnet
- Headline: role + specialities + what you're looking for, not just your job title.
- Keywords: put your top in-demand skills in the About and Skills sections so recruiters find you.
- Signal "Open to Work" and engage a few times a week — visibility rises with activity.
- Connect with recruiters with a one-line personal note, not a blank request.
Interview prep, in short
- Research the company — product, recent news, and why you want to work there.
- Prepare your stories using STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) for behavioural questions.
- Practise the core skills test for your field (DSA for developers, case/portfolio for analysts and marketers, role-plays for sales).
- Have questions ready — it signals genuine interest and helps you judge the offer.
- Know your numbers — check your market range on the benchmark tool before discussing pay.
⚠️ Avoid job scams
Genuine employers never charge you for a job, training kit or "registration". Be suspicious of offers that skip interviews, arrive only on WhatsApp/Telegram, use a non-company email, or promise "guaranteed placement" for a fee. When in doubt, verify the recruiter on the company's official site.

What are the best job portals in India for freshers?
For freshers, Internshala and Apna are strong for internships and entry-level roles, while Naukri, LinkedIn and Indeed carry the widest range of fresher openings. For tech, Wellfound (AngelList) and Instahyre list many startup roles.
How do I make my resume ATS-friendly?
Use a clean single-column layout with no tables, images or unusual fonts, mirror the exact keywords from the job description, and lead each point with a quantified achievement rather than a duty. Save as PDF unless the portal asks for a Word file, and test it with a free checker like Jobscan.
Do referrals really help you get a job?
Yes. A referral moves your application to the top of the recruiter's pile and often skips the initial screening. Reach out to alumni, ex-colleagues and second-degree LinkedIn connections with a short, specific message explaining why you fit the role.
How can I avoid job scams in India?
Never pay money for a job offer, training kit or "registration" — genuine employers do not ask for fees. Verify the recruiter's official company email and domain, be wary of offers that arrive only over WhatsApp or Telegram, and avoid "guaranteed placement" schemes.
